In our latest Epic Torque tip, we explain that anyone who has driven through a Saskatoon winter knows that the right tires make all the difference between a confident commute and a white-knuckle drive. With cold snaps, black ice and unpredictable snowfall all part of the season, your tires are one of the most important safety decisions you will make all year.

Why Winter Tires actually matter here

All-season tires are a compromise built to handle mild conditions reasonably well, but they are not built for real cold. Once the temperature drops below about seven degrees Celsius, the rubber in an all-season tire starts to stiffen up and loses grip, even on dry pavement. Winter tires are made from a softer compound that stays flexible in the cold, along with deeper tread and tiny grooves called sipes that bite into snow and ice for real traction.

Signs it is time for new tires

  • Tread depth below 4 millimetres, which you can check with a simple coin test
  • Cracks or dry rot along the sidewall
  • Uneven wear from one side of the tire to the other
  • A tire that is more than six years old, regardless of how much tread is left

A few simple habits that help

Check your tire pressure monthly, since cold air causes pressure to drop and an underinflated tire wears faster and handles worse. Rotate your tires on a regular schedule to even out wear across all four. And once winter tires come off in the spring, store them somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight, so they are ready to go again next season.

The team at Epic Automotive & Driveline carries a wide range of tires and can help you find the right fit for your vehicle and your budget, whether you are outfitting a daily driver or a work truck that needs to handle whatever the season throws at it.
